Data Backup & Transfer Solutions
Your photos and documents are irreplaceable. We set up bulletproof automated backup systems and securely transfer your digital life to your new computer.
Don't Wait Until It's Too Late
Hard drives fail. It is not a question of if, but when. Every mechanical drive has a limited lifespan, and SSDs can fail without warning. If your laptop was stolen tomorrow, or if a cup of coffee was spilled on it, would you lose your wedding photos? Your business accounts? Your novel?
At Leeds Computer & Laptop Repairs, we believe that automation is the key to safety. If you have to remember to plug in a drive to back up, you will forget. We design "set and forget" systems that work silently in the background, ensuring your data is safe without you lifting a finger.
We also specialize in the delicate art of Data Migration. Moving to a new Windows 11 PC or a new Mac? We transfer everything—files, folders, bookmarks, email archives, and even your desktop wallpaper—so your new computer feels like home instantly.
Complete Data Protection
We use the "3-2-1 Rule" to ensure you never lose a file.
Cloud Solutions
We configure OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox to deeply integrate with your file system. Your documents sync to the cloud instantly as you save them, protecting you from fire, theft, or hardware crash.
New PC Transfer
Bought a new machine? We perform a comprehensive migration. We don't just drag-and-drop; we ensure your Outlook PSTs, browser favorites, and iTunes libraries land in exactly the right place.
NAS Setup
For small businesses or photographers, we install Network Attached Storage (Synology/QNAP). This gives you a private "cloud" in your office, allowing central access to TBs of data with RAID redundancy.
Photo Consolidation
Photos scattered across three old laptops, two phones, and a drawer of USB sticks? We hunt them all down, remove duplicates, organize them by year, and put them in one secure library.
Encryption
If you carry sensitive client data, you need encryption. We set up BitLocker (Windows) or FileVault (Mac) so that if your laptop is stolen, the data is mathematically impossible to read.
Failing Drive Rescue
Is your drive clicking or running very slowly? We can often clone a failing drive to a healthy new SSD before it dies completely, saving you from an expensive data recovery bill.
The Golden Rule: 3-2-1 Backup
We preach the industry-standard 3-2-1 Strategy to all our clients. It is the only way to be 99.99% safe.
- 3 Copies of your data (The original + 2 backups).
- 2 Different Media types (e.g., your laptop hard drive + an external USB drive).
- 1 Offsite copy (e.g., The Cloud or a drive kept at a relative's house).
Why Cloud Is Better Than USB
USB External drives are great, but they have a fatal flaw: they are usually sitting right next to the computer. If there is a burglary or a fire, both the computer and the backup are lost. Cloud backup (Backblaze, OneDrive) is immune to local disasters. We help you pick the right plan (usually £2-£5/month) to secure terabytes of data.
Business GDPR Compliance
If you run a business in Leeds, you have legal obligations under GDPR to protect customer data. A lost, unencrypted USB stick can mean a massive fine. We audit your backup process to ensure you are compliant and your client data is secure.
Backup FAQ
Common questions about securing your files.
Can I just copy/paste programs to my new PC?
No. Installed programs (Office, Photoshop, Games) have entries in the Windows Registry and hidden system folders. They must be re-installed using the installer files. We can assist with locating installers and license keys.
Is Google Drive safe?
Yes. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. It is significantly safer than a USB stick in your drawer. However, for maximum privacy, we can set up tools like Cryptomator to encrypt your files before they upload to Google.
How often should I back up?
Ideally, continuously or daily. This is why we prefer automated systems. If you rely on manual backups, we recommend at least once a week.
My external drive stopped popping up. Can you fix it?
We can check if it is a simple enclosure fault (common) or a mechanical drive failure. If it's the enclosure, it's a cheap fix. If it's the drive itself, we can refer you to our Data Recovery cleanroom services.
