Loose Charging Connection Repair In Leeds
Is your laptop charger connection feeling loose or wobbly? Do you have to hold hold the cable at a specific angle just to get the charging light to flicker on? This is one of the most common laptop faults we see at our Leeds workshop, and it's one we can fix permanently.
Stop Wiggling The Wire!
It usually starts as a minor annoyance. You plug your laptop in, but the light doesn't come on. You give the wire a little wiggle, or maybe you prop the charger block up on a book, and suddenly it connects. "I'll sort it later," you think. But "later" often comes with a much bigger bill.
A loose connection is essentially a broken electrical circuit. When you wiggle the cable, you are forcing the metal contacts to touch momentarily. This constant connect-disconnect cycle creates tiny electrical arcs (sparks) inside the laptop.
Over time, this heat carbonizes the motherboard, melting the plastic housing and potentially damaging the surrounding chips. At Leeds Computer & Laptop Repairs, we urge customers in Headingley, Burley, and across Leeds to fix this issue as soon as it appears. It is a quick, affordable repair that saves your laptop from catastrophic motherboard failure.
Why Is My Laptop Charger Loose?
1. Broken Solder Joints (Cold Solder)
The DC jack (the port you plug into) is soldered directly to the motherboard on most laptops. Every time you plug it in or trip over the wire, that force goes straight to the solder points. Eventually, the solder cracks, creating a microscopic gap. Wiggling the wire closes this gap temporarily, but it's not a fix.
2. Damaged Internal Pin
Inside the charging port, there is often a central pin (common in HP and Dell laptops). If the charger is pulled aggressively, this pin can snap or become loose. This prevents the "ID signal" from reaching the laptop, so it might power on but refuse to charge the battery.
3. Worn Out Socket Housing
Over years of daily use, the spring-loaded contacts inside the barrel jack lose their tension. No matter how much you wiggle it, the connection remains weak. In this case, the entire port must be desoldered and replaced with a brand new unit.
How We Fix It In Leeds
We do not glue ports back in. We do not use "conductive paint." We perform a professional motherboard-level repair using industrial soldering equipment.
- Strip Down: We carefully disassemble your laptop, removing the battery, hard drive, and motherboard.
- Desoldering: Using hot air rework stations and desoldering braid, we completely remove the old, broken jack and all old lead-free solder.
- Preparation: We clean the motherboard contacts with isopropyl alcohol and inspect for burn damage to the PCB tracks.
- Installation: We install a brand new, high-quality DC jack. We use high-silver-content solder which is more flexible and conductive than the factory standard.
- Reinforcement: If the structural plastic was damaged using epoxy resin to bond the new jack to the chassis, ensuring it can withstand years of future plugging and unplugging.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about your loose charging port.
Is it definitely the port, or could it be my charger?
It could be either. Power bricks can develop internal cable breaks near the plug. We always recommend bringing both your laptop AND your charger to our Leeds workshop. We can test your charger instantly with a multimeter to rule it out before booking your laptop in for repair. If it's just the charger, we stock replacements!
How much does a Loose Connection repair cost?
For most standard laptops (HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba), the cost is between £60 and £80. This includes the new part, labour, and VAT. High-end gaming laptops or ultrabooks that require a full strip-down or micro-soldering (like USB-C ports) may cost slightly more, but we always give you a fixed price before starting.
Can't I just tape the wire in place?
We strongly advise against this. Taping the wire creates a high-resistance connection. This generates excess heat, which can melt the plastic casing of your laptop and even the charger tip itself. We have seen many motherboards destroyed by "home fixes" involving tape, blu-tack, or propping the wire up. It's much cheaper to fix the port properly.
How long will the repair take?
Because we stock hundreds of DC jacks right here in Leeds, we can usually offer a Same Day or Next Day service. If you drop it off in the morning on your way to work or university, we often have it ready by the afternoon. Complicated models might take 24 hours.
Will I lose my data?
No. Repairing a charging port is a purely hardware task. We do not need to access your Windows operating system, files, photos, or documents. Your data remains perfectly safe on your hard drive or SSD throughout the entire process.
