Why Your Laptop Won't Turn On

One of the most panic-inducing moments for any computer user is pressing the power button and... nothing. Silence. Black screen. No lights. Before you assume your data is gone forever, you should know that "No Power" issues are our specialty. In 90% of cases, the laptop is repairable and your data is perfectly safe.

Common Causes of No Power

  • Broken Power Jack (DC Jack): This is the most common issue. The charging port gets loose or pushed inside the laptop, preventing the battery from charging. Note: Wiggling the charger to make it work is a fire hazard!
  • Dead Charger: Sometimes the brick itself has failed. We test this for free in 30 seconds.
  • Static Build-up: Capacitors on the motherboard can hold a static charge that prevents boot. A "hard reset" (disconnecting the battery and holding power) often solves this.
  • Motherboard Short Circuit: A component on the main board (like a capacitor or mosfet) has failed, protecting the system by cutting power. We find and replace just that tiny component.
  • Liquid Damage: Even a drop of water in the wrong place can corrode a power rail.

Our Diagnostic Process

We don't guess. We use professional multimeters and bench power supplies to trace the flow of electricity through your laptop's circuit board. We start at the input (19V) and check if it converts down to the 5V and 3.3V rails needed for the logic chips. By finding exactly where the power stops, we can pinpoint the faulty chip.

The "Black Screen" Variation

Sometimes the power light comes on, the fan spins, but the screen stays black. This is called "No POST" (Power On Self Test). This is often caused by faulty RAM (Memory) or a corrupted BIOS chip. We have programmers to flash a fresh BIOS and get you booting again.

Cost vs. Replacement

A new laptop costs £500+. A power jack repair is typically £60-£80. A motherboard repair is £100-£150. Repairing is almost always cheaper than replacing, and it saves you the headache of reinstalling all your software and moving your files.
